A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has called on supporters of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to formally register with the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Okonkwo said Obi’s supporters, popularly known as Obidients, who fail to join the ADC should no longer be regarded as genuine supporters, labeling them “disObidients.”
Reflecting on his time in the Labour Party, Okonkwo said it was a strategic error to allow supporters to belong to multiple parties. He expressed satisfaction that Obi had revised that approach, noting that during an interview on X Space, Obi directed his supporters to register as ADC members.
“If you are an Obidient and you’re not in the ADC, sorry, you’re not an Obidient; you are a disObidient,” Okonkwo said on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He described the ADC as a credible opposition platform made up of people committed to democratic values, adding that the party enjoys strong support in the South-East. According to him, membership of the ADC is open to all, provided they are committed to true democracy.
“One thing the ADC will not compromise on is internal democracy and strict adherence to democratic principles,” he said, stressing that no leader or opposition figure is permitted to impose conditions before joining the party.
Okonkwo further claimed that the South-East has largely aligned with the ADC, arguing that politicians from the region working with other parties are indirectly supporting President Bola Tinubu.
He welcomed Obi’s move to the ADC and pledged to support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate in 2027, noting that the party has not yet decided on zoning its ticket.
“He is an ADC member, and we work with every ADC member. Whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the ADC, I will support. I have no personal rift with anyone,” Okonkwo said.
