Seun Okinbaloye, a host on Channels Television, has stated that he is “not afraid” of Nyesom Wike following the minister’s controversial remarks.

Wike had earlier sparked outrage after saying he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” the journalist over comments suggesting that a one-party system could endanger Nigeria’s democracy. The remark drew widespread condemnation, including from Amnesty International, which described it as “reckless and violent language.”

Responding on Sunday, Okinbaloye stood by his position, stressing that such rhetoric has no place in a democratic society. “The fact remains that our democracy is in danger if we allow one-way traffic in balloting,” he said. “This is not a warning to the opposition or ruling party, but to all Nigerians who believe in the development of our nation.”

He also disclosed that Wike contacted him after the backlash. “I received a call from the honourable minister, who clarified that the intention was not as conveyed,” Okinbaloye said, adding that regardless of the clarification, violent rhetoric is never acceptable in response to dissent.

Okinbaloye maintained that he would not be intimidated. “Let me be clear: I am not afraid and I will never be intimidated,” he said. “We may disagree, and as humans we may err, but dissent must never descend into hostility or harm.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to journalism, stating that he would continue asking critical questions and holding those in power accountable.
