The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against individuals accused of plotting a coup to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.
The defendants include 16 military officers, among them a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and others who were arrested on October 31, 2025, over allegations of involvement in the purported plot.
They are accused of offences including waging war against Nigeria and acts bordering on treason and terrorism.
In January 2026, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that there was indeed a plot to topple the Tinubu administration. The Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, said investigations carried out in line with military procedures revealed the involvement of some personnel.
He also noted that the affected officers would face appropriate military judicial panels in accordance with established disciplinary processes.
