Adebayo Adelabu has resigned from his role as Minister of Power.

In a letter dated April 22 and addressed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu said his resignation will take effect on April 30, as he prepares to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.

He explained that his decision was guided by provisions in the amended Electoral Act 2026, which prohibits political office holders from contesting elections while still in office.

Adelabu expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve, thanking the president for the trust placed in him. He described his appointment as a chance to contribute to reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.

His resignation follows a directive from President Tinubu requiring all political appointees seeking elective positions in 2027 to step down on or before March 31. The directive affects ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior aides, and heads of federal agencies intending to participate in party primaries or contest elections.
