Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has announced his departure from the party and his intention to join the Peoples Redemption Party.
He made the announcement on Tuesday during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, citing internal conflicts and what he described as a departure from the party’s original principles as reasons for his decision.
“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow… What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today,” he said, pointing to unresolved disagreements within the party.
Baba-Ahmed confirmed that his exit would take effect at midnight, adding that the PRP would be his new political home. “I am leaving the Labour Party [at]midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination,” he stated, describing the party as one with a long historical legacy.
The Peoples Redemption Party, founded in 1978 by the late Aminu Kano, is one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements.
Baba-Ahmed’s move marks a notable shift following his 2023 ticket with presidential candidate Peter Obi under the Labour Party, further reshaping the party’s post-election political dynamics.
