The Supreme Court of Nigeria has nullified the Ibadan convention organised by a faction of the People’s Democratic Party led by Tanimu Turaki, which took place in Ibadan in November last year.
In a split ruling of three to two, the court; through a lead judgment delivered by Justice Stephen Adah—strongly criticised the Turaki faction for disobeying court orders.
The decision followed an appeal against a Court of Appeal ruling which held that former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, was unlawfully excluded from the party’s chairmanship race.
The five-member panel faulted the Turaki group for ignoring directives from the trial court, including an order to suspend the planned convention until nomination forms were made available to all interested aspirants.
The apex court emphasised that proceeding with the Ibadan convention despite a valid court order was unacceptable and described the action as condemnable.
The convention, held on November 15 and 16, 2025, produced a factional leadership headed by Tanimu Turaki.
