President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State as part of immediate measures to bolster security following the recent abduction of pupils and teachers in the state.
The announcement was made on Sunday, May 31, during a visit by a high-level federal government delegation to the Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. The visit followed the abduction of pupils and teachers from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School on May 15, 2026.
The delegation, led by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, informed community leaders and lawmakers that requests for the establishment of a military base in the area would be forwarded to President Tinubu for consideration and possible approval.
Gbajabiamila also revealed that the President had directed a specialized security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts aimed at securing the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
“Mr. President is deeply concerned about this unfortunate incident. Whatever it takes, our children and teachers will be brought home safely. He has issued all necessary directives and is providing full support to our security agencies to ensure that objective is achieved.
“We understand the pain and anxiety this situation has caused. By the grace of God, your children will return safely to your families.
“The President has also taken note of appeals from parents and community members urging caution in the rescue operation. I want to assure you that the effort to secure the victims’ release will be intelligence-driven and carefully coordinated, employing both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to guarantee their safe return,” he said.
