The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a woman and a local pastor following the death of a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly beaten after being accused of theft.

The victim, identified as Nancy Peter, reportedly died after being assaulted in the Eastern Boki area of Cross River State.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the incident began when the teenager was accused of stealing. Her mother, 43-year-old Agnes Peter, allegedly beat her at home before taking her to a local church for further punishment.

Police said the girl was subsequently taken to Pastor Samson Roman Dago, 43, who allegedly flogged her with a cane. During the punishment, Nancy reportedly lost consciousness and was rushed to a healthcare facility in Wula.

Medical personnel later confirmed that she was dead on arrival.

ASP Eitokpah stated that the police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are working to establish all the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.

The command also dismissed reports circulating on social media that claimed the victim was sexually assaulted. According to preliminary medical findings, there is currently no evidence to support allegations of sexual violence.

Both Agnes Peter and Pastor Dago remain in police custody and are being interrogated as investigations continue.
