FIFA has opened an investigation into an alleged racist incident involving popular content creator IShowSpeed during the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash between Argentina and Cape Verde.
The alleged abuse reportedly occurred on July 3 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, where the 21-year-old streamer was watching the match while broadcasting live to millions of followers across his social media platforms.
According to reports, FIFA became aware of the incident after footage of the alleged abuse surfaced during IShowSpeed’s livestream. In a statement, football’s governing body confirmed it is reviewing the matter and reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on discrimination.
“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect,” the organisation said.
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., has been one of the tournament’s most prominent online personalities, livestreaming matches and interacting with several high-profile figures, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino and a number of football stars.
The American streamer is also widely recognised for his unwavering support for Cristiano Ronaldo and has built much of his football-related content around the long-standing rivalry between Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi.
With more than 57 million YouTube subscribers and over 53 million TikTok followers, IShowSpeed has played a significant role in bringing World Cup coverage to younger audiences around the world through his livestreams and digital content.
FIFA said its investigation will establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and determine whether disciplinary measures are warranted.
