At least 64 students of Government Science Secondary School, Batagarawa, in Katsina State, have reportedly been hospitalised after developing complications following the administration of medication for schistosomiasis, a parasitic worm infection.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred on October 26, 2026, after several students reportedly developed symptoms including vomiting, dizziness and abdominal pain shortly after taking the medication.

Some of the affected students were said to have been unconscious when they arrived at the hospitals.

The students were subsequently taken to General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital in Batagarawa, Katsina General Hospital and Turai Yar’Adua Hospital for medical treatment.

The report further alleged that some teachers physically assaulted students who complained of feeling unwell, accusing them of pretending to be sick instead of arranging medical assistance for them.

Reacting to the incident, Makama called on the Katsina State Government and the Ministries of Education and Health to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported complications.

He urged authorities to establish the type of medication administered, the dosage given to the students and whether the exercise was conducted under appropriate medical supervision.

Makama also called for an investigation into the allegations of physical assault against the teachers, urging the authorities to take appropriate action against anyone found culpable.
