A tragic incident unfolded on February 22 when Chidimma Susa Ezenyili, a 37-year-old Nigerian woman working as a caregiver in the United Kingdom, collapsed while tending to 86-year-old Ian Hale on Scott Road. Despite efforts to save her, Ezenyili passed away two days later.
Ezenyili, a lawyer by profession in Nigeria, had migrated to the UK with her husband, Friday, and their three-year-old daughter, Mandy, in August 2023, seeking better opportunities on sponsorship visas.
For the past five months, Ezenyili had been diligently caring for Hale, demonstrating compassion and dedication to her duties.
Recounting the distressing events, Catherine Segal, Hale’s daughter, revealed that Ezenyili had not been feeling well but continued her duties out of commitment. Tragically, she collapsed on February 22, prompting immediate efforts to save her life.
Despite the swift response of neighbours, GoodSAM first responders, and emergency services, Ezenyili was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where doctors discovered she had suffered a severe brain haemorrhage.
Saul, Segal’s husband, sadly recounted that despite the efforts, life support was eventually turned off on February 24, with Ezenyili passing away with her husband by her side.
Ezenyili, known affectionately as Suzy, had aspirations beyond caregiving. She had plans to pursue qualifications to practise law in the UK after completing her sponsorship. Described as kind, considerate, and dedicated, Ezenyili’s dream was for her daughter, Mandy, to have opportunities for a better life in the UK, a life she and Friday never had in Nigeria.
