Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned Portugal manager Jorge Jesus that he could risk losing his position unless he publicly apologises to Cristiano Ronaldo following a high-profile dispute between the veteran striker and the national team hierarchy.

Ronaldo, reportedly unhappy with the way the situation was handled, held discussions with Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proença before leaving the national team camp.

Speaking about the controversy on a podcast shared across his social media platforms, Ferdinand argued that maintaining harmony within the squad should take priority when dealing with a player of Ronaldo’s stature.

“The coach has to come out and apologise… otherwise, he’s eventually going to get sacked. He has to say publicly, ‘Listen, I got this situation wrong,’” Ferdinand said.

However, 72-year-old Jesus has remained defiant, insisting that he has nothing to apologise for and that the dispute arose from a straightforward managerial decision.

“I don’t apologise to anyone. The problem that started all of this was that the player was warming up. I made the decision. What do I have to apologise for?” Jesus said.

He added: “I am the manager, and I call up whoever I want. I do not consult anyone about the players I wish to select or who will play.”

As tensions continue to simmer, FPF president Pedro Proença has reportedly attempted to mediate between the two sides. Jesus has also left the door open for Ronaldo’s return, indicating that the Al-Nassr forward could remain in contention for future squads if he continues to perform at club level.

However, reports suggest Ronaldo has established certain conditions regarding his international future while the current technical team remains in charge.
