A 71-year-old cyclist died on Monday, October 5, after his bicycle collided with an off-leash dog in New York City’s Central Park, according to police.
An NYPD source told TMZ that officers received a report shortly after 8 a.m. concerning the incident near 84th Street and East Drive. The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, struck a golden retriever, causing him to fall to the ground.
Emergency responders transported the man to NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The dog was not injured, while its owner remained at the scene, according to the police source. Sources told FOX 5 New York that the owner attempted to perform CPR on the cyclist.
According to the Central Park Conservancy, dogs are permitted to be off-leash in designated areas between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. However, dogs must remain on a short leash at all times on the park’s drives.
No summonses had been issued to the dog’s owner as of the time of the report, the NYPD source said. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
