A yet-to-be-identified cyclist has tragically died after colliding with a moving truck in the Ikeja area of Lagos. The accident, which occurred at Alausa Bus Stop near ‘Radio’ on Kudirat Abiola Way, was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement from its General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, on Sunday.
According to Bakare-Oki, the incident involved the cyclist and a heavily loaded truck (registration number BDG 610 YA). Preliminary investigations suggest the cyclist was attempting a maneuver from Kudirat Abiola Way to ‘Radio’ on Obafemi Awolowo Way when the collision occurred. The impact caused the cyclist to lose control, and he struck his head against the pavement, suffering fatal injuries and dying instantly.
Eyewitnesses reported that the cyclist was speaking on the phone with an earpiece, which may have led to a lapse in concentration on the busy expressway.
LASTMA operatives quickly responded to the scene, securing the area to ensure the safety of other road users and maintain traffic flow. Officers from the Alausa Police Division were notified and arrived promptly. While managing traffic around the site, LASTMA officials handed the deceased’s body to the police, who then transported it to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja.
Bakare-Oki expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the need for all road users, especially cyclists, to adhere strictly to safety guidelines. He urged cyclists to wear appropriate protective gear and avoid distractions, such as phone use, to prevent accidents. He also reminded them not to contest the right of way with motorized vehicles.
