Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.
The 33-year-old defender, who plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli, reportedly embraced Islam in Doha, according to Qatari newspaper Al-Arab.
Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah also shared a video on his verified Facebook page showing Troost-Ekong reciting the Islamic declaration of faith.
Troost-Ekong began his career in the Arab region in 2024 when he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej. He subsequently moved to Qatar, signing an 18-month contract with Al-Ahli in January 2026.
Since joining the club, the defender has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one appearance this season.
At international level, Troost-Ekong represented Nigeria from 2015 to 2025, earning 83 caps and scoring eight goals.
He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player.
Troost-Ekong also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced defenders during his international career.
