Former English footballer Joe Thompson has disclosed that he is battling cancer for the third time. The 35-year-old, who previously fought Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013 and then had a recurrence four years later, revealed that the cancer has returned in a more aggressive form, now at stage four.

Thompson shared his struggles with BBC Radio Manchester, expressing the challenges he faces with breathing, sleeping, and even talking due to the cancer spreading to his lungs. Despite the difficult situation, he maintains his fighting spirit, acknowledging that facing cancer for the third time is emotionally challenging.

During his football career, Thompson made 203 appearances for Rochdale, but his playing time decreased in his final season as he battled health issues. He first received his diagnosis while playing for Tranmere, and although he returned to the pitch following treatment, the disease resurfaced during his time with Rochdale.

Despite the setbacks, Thompson remains determined to prioritize his quality of life and cherishes the simple joys, such as spending time with his children and being active. He admits to facing doubts and emotional struggles but remains steadfast in his resolve never to give up, even in the face of adversity.
