Plateau University, Bokkos, has implemented a temporary suspension of academic activities for a duration of 10 days following the tragic killing of a second-year student of the institution.
In a statement issued by Mr. Yakubu Ayuba, the Registrar of the university, in Jos on Saturday, April 20, the decision was conveyed to the public.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday night, April 18, when gunmen launched an attack on Chikam, a neighboring community to the university, resulting in the death of a student identified as Dading Jordan. The university had initially declared a two-day mourning period to honor the deceased student.
“Considering the distressing occurrence that transpired in Plateau University, Bokkos, and the nearby communities, the management has taken the difficult step to close the University for a period of 10 days, effective from Friday, April 19. This measure is aimed at allowing the security situation to stabilize and mitigating risks to individuals within the university community. Consequently, the ongoing first semester examinations are hereby halted and are scheduled to resume on Thursday, May 2,” stated Mr. Ayuba.
Additionally, arrangements have been made to provide transportation for students who may find themselves stranded, ensuring their safe return from the university to Barkin Ladi.
