Gunmen kill 85-year-old community leader in Benin

Gunmen have killed an 85-year-old community leader, Hon. Reuben Owie, in Edo State.

Owie, who served as the Secretary of Iyowa Community, was reportedly shot dead by two unidentified gunmen at his residence in Iguosa, near Okhungun, Benin City.

The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident to journalists in Benin on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Ikoedem said the police received a report from the deceased’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, following the attack at the victim’s residence at No. 2 Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road, Benin City.

According to the police spokesperson, Osayomwanbo reported that his 85-year-old father was attacked by two unidentified gunmen at about 8:15 p.m. on August 2.

She said one of the attackers allegedly shot Owie in the head, killing him instantly.

Ikoedem added that police officers visited the scene, documented the incident and recovered relevant evidence, while investigations were ongoing.

She said the command had intensified efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects responsible for the killing.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
