Two senior police officers attached to the Abia State Police Command were killed, while three others sustained injuries after gunmen attacked the Uratta Divisional Police Headquarters in Aba, Abia State, at about 2 a.m. on Saturday, October 17.

Reports indicate that the attackers used explosives to destroy part of the station building and set the division’s patrol van ablaze.

The gunmen reportedly operated at the facility for nearly an hour without resistance.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the attackers stormed the station in search of firearms and ammunition but left without obtaining any.

Confirming the incident, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chinaka, said the attack occurred at about 2:26 a.m. She explained that the hoodlums used explosives, triggering a fire that damaged part of the building and the divisional patrol van.

Chinaka confirmed that two senior police officers lost their lives in the attack, while three inspectors sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

She further clarified that the attackers did not cart away any firearms or ammunition during the incident.

According to the PPRO, the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, personally led an operational team comprising tactical units of the Command to the scene.

The team searched the surrounding areas and restored calm, while intensified security operations and surveillance have been launched to track down and arrest those responsible for the attack, she added.
