Renowned American actor James McCaffrey, best known for lending his voice to the iconic video game character Max Payne, has passed away at the age of 65.
McCaffrey succumbed to bone marrow cancer on Sunday, December 17, surrounded by loved ones. A protege of Dick Wolf and a seasoned actor with a successful 35-year career in television and film, McCaffrey, trained at the Actor’s Studio, maintained a passion for creating characters throughout his life. Despite being frequently cast in leading man roles due to his striking appearance, he never lost his love for the craft.
Actor Kevin Dillon expressed his grief on Instagram, saying, ‘James McCaffrey, we were lucky to have known you. My best friend, you will be missed.’ McCaffrey not only portrayed Max Payne in Remedy’s three-game series but also took on roles in other Remedy games like Alan Wake and Control. Recently, he lent his voice to the character Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2, a role with a physical appearance inspired by Remedy’s Sam Lake.
Remedy, in a statement on X/Twitter, mourned the loss, saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved friend and collaborator James McCaffrey, the iconic voice of Max Payne and Alex Casey. His remarkable talent gave life to our characters and left an enduring impact on our community. Our hearts go out to his family.”
James McCaffrey is survived by his wife, Rochelle Bostrom, and daughter, Tiernan.
