Manchester United have been dealt a blow after highly rated academy prospect JJ Gabriel reportedly asked the club to cancel his registration with immediate effect.
The 15-year-old, regarded as one of the brightest talents in United’s youth setup, has formally informed the club of his desire to leave.
Gabriel, who has been nicknamed “Kid Messi,” joined Manchester United at the age of 11 and has progressed rapidly through the academy ranks. His performances at youth level have attracted significant attention, particularly after an impressive campaign with the club’s Under-19 side.
The teenager recently scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut, becoming the youngest Manchester United player to achieve the feat in the competition. He was also named the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year last season.
United had reportedly been considering accelerating Gabriel’s progression into the first team and were even weighing up including him in the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Brighton. An appearance could have made him the club’s youngest-ever first-team player.
However, his decision to request his release has now put those plans on hold.
Reports suggest Manchester United are unwilling to simply let Gabriel leave and remain hopeful of reaching an agreement with the youngster and his family. The club reportedly believes the situation can still be resolved and that Gabriel can be persuaded to continue his development at Old Trafford.
Gabriel is currently unable to sign a professional contract because of his age and will turn 16 on October 6. His existing agreement with United is reportedly valid until the end of the season, giving the club grounds to challenge his request to leave.
The exact reasons for his decision remain unclear. However, reports have linked it to concerns over his development and opportunities during pre-season.
Gabriel reportedly made only a brief substitute appearance during United’s pre-season campaign, despite expectations that he would be given a more prominent role.
