Oba Abimbola Owoade has been officially crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
He succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
The coronation ceremony took place at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo, where Governor Seyi Makinde joined a distinguished group of dignitaries. Notable attendees included the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and Aare Ona Kankanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, among others.
President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.
Oba Owoade received the staff of office and instrument of office on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, marking his formal ascension to the throne following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
The new monarch successfully completed the 21-day traditional rites, known as Oro Ipebi, on Saturday, March 29.
