Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has clarified that there is no merger agreement with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party ahead of 2027  elections

Obi made this statement during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday morning, January 2. The former governor of Anambra State emphasized that no formal agreement has been made with other parties and urged all Nigerians committed to the country’s progress to unite in 2027 to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging national resources.

On the state of the nation, Obi lamented the deteriorating security situation, pointing out that Nigerians continue to lose their lives to banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings for ransom. He also highlighted the persistently high levels of corruption and the escalating cost of governance, which he said has contributed to a sharp rise in public debt under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu’s APC administration.

Obi also criticized government officials for what he described as the reckless mismanagement of public funds in 2024, especially through frequent foreign trips.

In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu emerged victorious, winning 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states and securing a total of 8,794,726 votes—almost two million more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP. Atiku, who has run for president six times, garnered 6,984,520 votes, while Obi, in his first presidential bid, earned a historic 6,101,533 votes.
