The Cross River State Police Command has uncovered an illegal mortuary in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area, where eight decomposed bodies were found.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, the command confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the discovery. Preliminary findings suggest the suspect is affiliated with a company operating in the area.
According to the statement, the operation followed credible intelligence received on February 13, 2026, about the presence of corpses at a local embalming facility in Isong Inyang Community along the Calabar–Ikom Highway.
“At about 11:56 hours on the said date, credible information was received regarding the presence of corpses at the facility. Operatives were immediately deployed to verify the report. Upon arrival, eight dried corpses were discovered in the hall,” the statement said.
Police identified the suspect as Sunday Ben Reuben, a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State. He is said to be a mortician attached to Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa LGA.
He remains in police custody while investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any laws were violated.
The command called on residents to remain calm and refrain from speculation, assuring the public that further confirmed updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
