Sheffield United becomes first team relegated from EPL after heavy loss at Newcastle

Sheffield United’s fate was sealed as they became the first team to be relegated from the English Premier League this season following a crushing 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday, April 27.

Under Chris Wilder’s leadership, Sheffield United had already set a dubious record for conceding the most goals in a 38-game Premier League season, tallying a staggering 97 goals against. They are now on course to surpass Swindon Town’s long-standing record of 100 goals conceded in the 1994-95 season when the league comprised 22 teams.

While Sheffield United have already endured the ignominy of achieving the lowest points tally in Premier League history, a record held by Derby County with 11 points in the 2007-08 season, their dismal campaign may see them register the third-fewest points in a 38-game season if they fail to secure any points in their remaining three fixtures.

The remainder of Sheffield United’s season includes home clashes against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, sandwiched between a visit to Everton’s Goodison Park.

Looking ahead to the Championship campaign, Sheffield United faces additional challenges. They will kick off the season on a deficit of minus-2 points after being penalized by the English Football League for failing to meet financial obligations to other clubs.
