Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle: ‘Money Was Not My Reason for Coming to Nigeria

Eric Chelle has disclosed that he accepted a pay cut to coach the Super Eagles because he believes in the team’s potential and aims to make a lasting impact.

“When I came to Nigeria, it wasn’t for the money. I was earning more in my previous job. I came here because this is a very big team, and I want to prove something, to achieve something. I came for the challenge, and nothing has changed about that,” Chelle said in an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.

Chelle and the Super Eagles currently face intense pressure as they strive to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Their upcoming matches are critical, with Rwanda visiting Uyo next month, followed by a decisive encounter in South Africa.

Despite the uncertainty around his future, Chelle remains composed and focused.

“I understand very well that I could be fired after just one match — that’s the reality of football,” he stated. “But if that happens, the club must be prepared to honor the remainder of my contract.”
