A Nigerian businessman, Lawal Hamisu, on Tuesday, July 21, asked a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, to order his former wife, Maman Muhammad, to vacate his house following the breakdown of their marriage.
Counsel to the petitioner, H.B. Debo, told the court that Hamisu had already pronounced divorce on Muhammad three times in accordance with Islamic practice but allowed her to remain in the house temporarily so she could care for their children.
According to Hamisu, the arrangement has become unbearable, alleging that his former wife has turned the children against him.
“She has poisoned my children’s minds against me, and they no longer respect me. Every day there is trouble in the house. My oldest child now hits me and no longer respects me as a father,” he told the court.
Hamisu added that he wants his former wife to leave the house so he can bring in his ailing mother and personally care for her.
In her defence, Muhammad pleaded with the court, saying she has nowhere else to live.
“I am an orphan, and I have a three-year-old daughter who needs me. I beg the court to order my former husband to provide me with a place to stay,” she said.
Presiding Judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, adjourned the matter until August 3 for ruling.
