“This Isn’t Music” – Journalist Jimi Disu Criticizes Nigerian Grammy Winners

Veteran journalist and broadcaster Jimi Disu has voiced his disappointment with the current direction of Nigerian music, particularly singling out Grammy-winning artists.

Speaking during a recent podcast appearance, Disu questioned the artistic integrity of some celebrated Nigerian musicians, implying that their work often lacks meaningful content and social impact.

“I’m sorry to say this, but when I look at some Nigerians who have even won Grammy awards, I feel this isn’t real music,” Disu said.

He stressed that genuine musical artistry should elevate public consciousness and confront pressing societal issues—qualities he sees lacking in many of today’s popular tracks. Disu cited musical icons like Fela Kuti and Bob Marley as examples of artists who used their platforms to promote activism and awareness.

“How come Fela Kuti, with all his advocacy and brilliance in music, never got a Grammy? Because he was an activist. He was raising consciousness,” he argued. “Or how come Bob Marley never got a Grammy?”

Disu further claimed that the music industry tends to reward what he called “safe” entertainment, while marginalizing artists who challenge the status quo.

“It’s entertainment—quote-unquote ‘safe.’ But those who are raising consciousness never get anywhere near those awards,” he stated.

He concluded by expressing admiration for artists like Femi Kuti, who continue to use music as a tool for activism, noting with approval that such artists no longer chase industry validation.

Disu’s remarks have reignited conversations about the value systems behind major music awards and the broader role of music in driving societal change.
