US President Donald Trump has responded to a public appeal from Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, asking him to pardon his client, saying the case is a state matter and therefore outside his authority.
Clancy is accused of killing her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. Her defense team has acknowledged that she killed the children but argued that she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time.
Reddington made the appeal during an appearance on Good Morning America on September 8, urging Trump to consider Clancy’s mental health condition and what she had endured.
However, speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said the case was “actually a state situation, not a federal” matter.
“It’s a very sad situation,” Trump said. “There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead.”
Trump also praised Reddington as a good attorney and expressed hope that a resolution could be reached.
“He’s a good attorney. I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney,” Trump said. “I hope they can work something out. That’s something they have to work out.”
Clancy, a former labor-and-delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. Her defense has maintained that she was experiencing hallucinations and delusions linked to postpartum psychosis following the birth of her third child.
The case ended in a mistrial after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict. According to NBC10 Boston, jury foreperson Roni Carlson said one male juror expressed reasonable doubt about Clancy’s guilt but did not say he believed she was not
