X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced the termination of its creator revenue-sharing programme, with final payments to eligible creators expected to be made in September.
The social media platform, owned by Elon Musk, said it stopped accepting new applications for the existing programme on August 7. The final payment cycle will cover eligible earnings accrued through September 7.
The revenue-sharing programme enabled qualified creators to earn money from engagement generated by their posts. Participation was restricted to users subscribed to a paid X Premium plan who also met the platform’s eligibility requirements.
X said it decided to discontinue the programme after concerns that its incentive structure encouraged some users to repost or repurpose existing material rather than create original content.
Allegra Jacchia, X’s head of creators, said the platform would replace the programme with a new system aimed at rewarding original content.
Under the new Original Content Rewards programme, eligible creators will earn based on qualified impressions generated by their original posts. Payments will be made every two weeks, provided creators and their content continue to meet the programme’s requirements.
According to X, qualifying original content may include threads, videos, memes, original reporting, analysis, commentary, reactions, photographs, graphics, illustrations and other forms of creative work.
Content that substantially transforms existing material through original analysis, narration, humour or creative editing may also qualify for rewards.
X said the new programme is intended to recognise creators who bring original ideas, expertise, creativity and value to conversations on the platform.
For now, access to the new programme is limited to creators already enrolled in the existing revenue-sharing scheme.
To qualify, creators must be at least 18 years old, reside in an eligible country, operate a Personal or Business account and subscribe to a premium X plan. They must also have at least 500 verified followers and record a minimum of 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users within a 90-day period.
Applications for the Original Content Rewards programme can be submitted through Creator Studio. Creators whose applications are rejected will be allowed one appeal and may submit a new application after 90 days if they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
X said existing participants will receive their final payments under the outgoing revenue-sharing programme, with the last payment covering earnings through September 7.
The first payout under the new Original Content Rewards programme is scheduled for August 28, while creators who enrol from September 8 are expected to receive their first payment on September 25.
