Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has praised the Federal Government’s approval of a N70,000 monthly transport allowance for workers, describing the move as evidence that President Bola Tinubu is concerned about the welfare of Nigerian workers.

Oshiomhole made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, where he defended the administration’s performance and called on Nigerians to recognise its efforts.

According to the former Edo State governor, the additional allowance represents significant financial relief for low-income earners.

“I think this government is doing well. If a man who was on N70,000 is now given an additional N70,000, making it N140,000, that is a 100 per cent increase. If you know what N10,000 means to the real masses, you will appreciate that Tinubu has shown that he cares,” he said.

The Federal Government approved the N70,000 monthly transport allowance for workers across all levels for an initial period of six months, beginning in November 2026.

The intervention followed a meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on October 27, during which both parties reached an agreement on measures to ease the financial burden on workers.

The agreement also provides for the settlement of outstanding peculiar allowances in three equal monthly instalments, starting in November.

However, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has rejected the temporary transport allowance, arguing that workers require a permanent salary increase rather than short-term financial relief.
