The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has identified and detained officers accused of allegedly extorting โฆ40,000 from a resident along the Wuye-Utako Road near Salem Church in Abuja.
The development followed a video that surfaced on social media on August 24, in which a man alleged that police officers collected the money from him despite confirming that his documents were in order.
FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the officers featured in the video had been identified and were currently in custody.
According to the Command, the complainant alleged that an officer collected โฆ40,000 from him at a checkpoint on August 20, 2026. He reportedly shared a receipt and footage of a conversation he claimed took place after he returned to the checkpoint.
Adeh said the complainant had been invited to the FCT Police Command Headquarters to provide a formal statement to assist with the investigation and determine whether disciplinary action was warranted.
She also urged the complainant and members of the public with relevant information to contact the Command through its official channels.
FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi reiterated that the Command would not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct or other forms of unprofessional behaviour by its personnel.
He said any officer found culpable after investigation would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action in line with existing laws and regulations.
The latest case comes amid recurring complaints of alleged police extortion at checkpoints across Abuja. In June 2026, Sanusi warned officers against extorting commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators, saying personnel involved in such acts would be treated as criminals rather than police officers.
In July, the Command also detained four officers and ordered their orderly room trial after they were accused of abandoning their posts, setting up an unauthorised checkpoint and allegedly collecting about โฆ52,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Musa Aliyu.
