The Ondo State Police Command has arrested ten suspects in connection with a robbery and assassination attempt on the traditional ruler of Igoba Community in Akure North Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Thursday, October 2, 2025, when a group of armed men allegedly stormed the community, robbing residents at gunpoint and injuring several individuals in the process. The attackers later advanced to the palace of the Obaloogun of Igoba, Oba Adeniyi Adinlewa John, in what police described as an attempted assassination. The monarch, however, narrowly escaped unharmed.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the arrests and described the incident as a violent attack that occurred around 11:30 p.m.

“On the said day, a group of hoodlums armed with firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons invaded Igoba Community with the intent to wreak havoc. One resident, Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, was brutally attacked, injured, and robbed of her possessions,” the statement read.

“They proceeded to the palace of His Royal Highness, Oba Adinlewa John, where they attempted to assassinate him. Fortunately, the monarch escaped the life-threatening assault.”

Acting on a distress call, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, immediately deployed tactical units and other operational assets to the area. The operation, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, resulted in the arrest of 10 suspects.

SP Ayanlade revealed that the suspects confessed to their roles in the attack and would face prosecution upon conclusion of the investigation.

Items recovered from the suspects include two locally fabricated pistols, one single-barrel gun, several rounds of live ammunition, machetes, knives, assorted charms, and other dangerous weapons used during the assault.
