The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has recovered the body of a 25-year-old man from a soakaway in the Kinnira area opposite Zion Christian Academy School in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of the state.
The deceased, whose identity was not revealed, reportedly fell into the soakaway on Friday, May 22, 2026, while trying to inspect an abandoned building.
The incident was confirmed on Saturday by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the agency, Moroof Akinwande.
According to Akinwande, the agency received an emergency call at about 7:41 p.m. from a resident, John Onigbinde, informing officials that a man had fallen into a soakaway in the area.
Following the alert, fire service personnel led by CFS Dairo were dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
“The rescue team immediately commenced operations using the required rescue procedures and safety techniques. The victim was later recovered and handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Owode Division, Ogbomoso,” the statement said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had attempted to inspect storage tanks situated near the soakaway to check the water level. While trying to cross the area, he reportedly lost his footing and fell into the uncovered pit.
Akinwande advised residents to be cautious around soakaways, wells and other exposed openings, stressing that unsecured sites pose significant dangers to public safety.
