The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away.
Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, following a brief illness.
House Spokesman Akin Rotimi confirmed her death in a statement released on Wednesday evening.
“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, who, until her death, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State,” the statement read.
“Representative Onanuga, born on December 2, 1965, was a devoted public servant, visionary leader, and passionate advocate for her people. She was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress and served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she championed policies for women’s empowerment and social welfare.”
Onanuga was re-elected in 2023 and appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, a position in which she demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to legislative discipline, particularly during parliamentary sittings.
Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya,’ Onanuga’s intellect, humility, and dedication to excellence earned her respect from both her colleagues and constituents. Her contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her commitment to improving society and her tireless service to the public.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State, especially the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency, and the entire National Assembly,” the statement added.
“As we mourn the loss of this vibrant and committed lawmaker, her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.”
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course. May her soul rest in peace, and may her legacy endure.
