Police authorities in Anambra State have arrested a 65-year-old man, Akpan Godwin, who was found in possession of over 1,000 rounds of live ammunition in the commercial city of Onitsha.

The spokesperson for the state police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday, August 23.

According to Ikenga, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad attached to Akwuzu apprehended Godwin on Friday at Nkpor, near Onitsha, following credible intelligence.

“Police operatives acting on credible intelligence arrested one Akpan Godwin, male, aged 65 years, in possession of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition,” the statement read.

During interrogation, Godwin reportedly confessed to engaging in the illegal sale of ammunition and revealed the identities of other individuals involved in the illicit trade.

Ikenga noted that investigations are currently underway to track down his accomplices and dismantle the broader network responsible for arms distribution in the state.

“The operatives have intensified efforts to uncover and apprehend all accomplices linked to the illegal arms supply,” he added.
