Aston Villa to take legal action against pundit Carragher

Aston Villa have announced plans to take legal action against former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher over comments the club described as “unacceptable insults” directed at the team and its supporters.

The controversy followed remarks made by Carragher on the Stick to Football podcast, where he discussed speculation linking Aston Villa manager Unai Emery with a possible move to Manchester United.

During the discussion, Carragher suggested that Emery could be interested in managing another major European club if Manchester United decided to part ways with Michael Carrick.

His comments sparked backlash from Aston Villa supporters, prompting the former England defender to defend his position by arguing that football has an established hierarchy among clubs.

“I’m not trying to annoy Villa fans but there is a chain in football, whether you like it or not,” Carragher said.

He went on to cite Real Madrid’s ability to attract Manchester United’s top players, referencing Cristiano Ronaldo, and argued that only a handful of clubs rank above United and Liverpool in football’s hierarchy.

Carragher also maintained that Aston Villa benefited from the same structure by recruiting players and managers from other clubs.

However, the former defender further fuelled the controversy by telling Villa supporters to “shut the f*** up” before declaring: “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”

In a statement published on the club’s social media platforms on Friday, Aston Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris confirmed that the club intended to pursue legal action against Carragher.

“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans,” Sawiris said.

He added: “Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football.”

The club did not disclose the legal grounds for the proposed action and had not immediately responded to a request for further comment from Reuters.

Carragher also did not immediately respond to the news agency’s request for comment. However, he addressed the backlash on social media, insisting that his remarks were intended as a joke following criticism from Villa supporters over his earlier comments about Emery.

“It was a joke after the stick Villa fans have given me over saying Emery may fancy joining Man Utd,” he wrote.

He further argued that the clips circulating online should be viewed alongside his longstanding praise for Emery and Aston Villa, including his support for the club’s Europa League triumph in Istanbul.

Carragher maintained that his suggestion about a possible Manchester United move was based on his admiration for Emery, whom he considers one of the Premier League’s top managers, rather than an attempt to undermine Aston Villa.

The disagreement comes amid growing pressure on Manchester United following a disappointing start to the season under Carrick.

Meanwhile, Emery has transformed Aston Villa’s fortunes since taking charge four years ago, guiding the club to the Champions League on two occasions and ending a 30-year wait for silverware with a Europa League triumph last season.

Despite that success, Villa have experienced significant changes to their squad, with six players who started the Europa League final leaving during the transfer window. The departures were reportedly influenced by higher wages elsewhere and the desire for more regular opportunities to compete for major trophies.

Before taking charge at Aston Villa, Emery enjoyed managerial success with Valencia and Sevilla, while also having spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

During the podcast discussion, Carragher reiterated his belief that the Villa manager could be tempted by another opportunity at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

“Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again,” he said.
