Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed optimism that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, will be released in the near future.
Otti made the remarks on Friday during a one-day official visit to Abia State by President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
“I can assure you that I am engaging with Mr. President. He is favourably disposed to it, and I am sure that in no distant future, Nnamdi Kanu will regain his freedom,” Otti stated at the event.
He further emphasized his long-standing friendship with President Tinubu, saying, “Mr. President and I have been friends for decades. Whatever he wants to do, he will tell you honestly. Having made promises, I am confident he will keep them.”
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Minister of Works Dave Umahi urged residents of the South-East region to remain united and peaceful.
“I ask the people of the South-East to come together in unity. As your brother, I have heard the messages from Mr. President and the comments from the governor of Abia State,” Umahi said.
He also revealed that regional leaders are actively pursuing a political solution regarding Kanu’s case.
“I want to assure Senator Abaribe and Governor Otti that the governors of the South-East are working diligently. They are exploring a political resolution alongside our senators, House of Representatives members, and ministers,” he added.
Umahi affirmed the Federal Government’s commitment, supported by President Tinubu, to resolving the issue peacefully.
“With the president’s love for the South-East, I am confident a peaceful resolution will be achieved. However, we must remain law-abiding and appreciative, recognizing that this administration has placed the South-East at the center of national affairs,” he concluded.
