Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of his letter citing pressing family reasons.

In a statement issued by presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga, the President acknowledged receipt of Egbetokun’s resignation on February 24 and expressed deep appreciation for his decades of dedicated service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year tenure scheduled to end in June 2027, in accordance with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

Amid ongoing security challenges across the country, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect, in line with existing laws and legal guidance.

The President expressed confidence that AIG Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and proven leadership will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this critical time.

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
