The House of Representatives has disclosed plans to vote on a constitutional amendment seeking to establish state and local government police forces as part of measures to address Nigeria’s growing security challenges.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, made the announcement while briefing journalists after plenary. He explained that lawmakers have agreed to give priority consideration to the state police proposal ahead of other constitutional amendment bills.

According to Kalu, all members of the House currently engaged in oversight functions outside Abuja have been directed to suspend their assignments and return to the National Assembly on Thursday, June 11, for the crucial voting exercise.

The proposed legislation, which is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker alongside 14 other lawmakers, seeks to amend the Constitution to pave the way for the establishment of state and local police forces across the country.
