Jadon Sancho has officially left Manchester United, bringing an end to a disappointing five-year stint at Old Trafford that began with a £75 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
United announced that Sancho will depart as a free agent at the end of the month, alongside Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro, whose contracts are also set to expire.
The winger made 83 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists, making him one of the club’s most expensive signings ever. However, he spent much of the last two-and-a-half seasons away from Manchester on loan at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
Sancho’s only appearance for United since August 2023 came in the 2024 Community Shield. His final Premier League outing for the club was nearly three years ago, before his highly publicised fallout with former manager Erik ten Hag.
The dispute began when Ten Hag omitted Sancho from the squad for a match against Arsenal, citing poor performances in training. Sancho publicly rejected the criticism, claiming he was being made a “scapegoat.” The standoff led to his exclusion from first-team activities before he returned to Dortmund on loan in January 2024.
Despite his struggles at United, Sancho featured in European finals in each of the last three seasons with three different clubs — the Champions League with Dortmund, and the Conference League with Chelsea and Villa. He won the latter two competitions.
Chelsea opted against making his move permanent, paying a £5 million penalty clause to avoid triggering a mandatory purchase. Aston Villa are also not expected to sign him permanently after he started only nine league matches under manager Unai Emery.
Dortmund have reportedly expressed interest in bringing Sancho back for a third spell this summer.
Meanwhile, Casemiro’s departure had already been confirmed. The 34-year-old midfielder joined United from Real Madrid in 2022 for £63 million and went on to score 26 goals in 160 appearances. He played a key role in United’s third-place finish this season.
