FIFA extends South Africa’s Themba Zwane’s World Cup ban

South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA following his red card in Bafana Bafana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico national football team.

Zwane was dismissed late in South Africa’s 2-0 defeat after officials judged that he struck Mexico defender Roberto Alvarado in the face during the game.

Although red cards typically result in an automatic one-match ban, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and imposed a tougher sanction. The decision means the 36-year-old will miss South Africa’s remaining Group A fixtures, including a key match against the Czech Republic national football team.

FIFA noted that while one-match suspensions are standard for red cards, additional punishment can be applied depending on the severity of the offence. South Africa may still attempt to appeal the ruling in a bid to reduce or overturn the ban.
