Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva has joined Real Madrid on a two-year contract following the expiration of his deal with Manchester City, the Spanish club confirmed on Wednesday, June 17.

In an official statement, Real Madrid announced that the 31-year-old has signed an agreement that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 30, 2028.

“Real Madrid C.F. and Bernardo Silva have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028,” the club said.

Silva leaves Manchester City after a highly successful nine-year spell that established him as one of the club’s most influential players. Since arriving from Monaco in 2017, he made 459 appearances and scored 76 goals across all competitions.

During his time under Pep Guardiola, the Portuguese international won 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2023. He was also instrumental in City’s historic treble-winning campaign that year and played a key role in the club’s run of four consecutive Premier League titles between 2021 and 2024.

A regular for Portugal, Silva has earned 109 international caps and is currently representing his country at the FIFA World Cup. He is expected to feature in Portugal’s Group K opening match against DR Congo in Houston.

His arrival forms part of an extensive rebuilding project at Real Madrid following a disappointing season in which the club finished eight points behind Barcelona in La Liga and exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

The Spanish giants recently appointed José Mourinho as head coach after club president Florentino Pérez secured another term in office.

Madrid have also bolstered their squad with the signing of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth €55 million. The club continues to be linked with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté and Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries as it seeks further reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

Meanwhile, German defender Antonio Rüdiger has committed his future to the club by extending his contract until 2027.

Silva’s arrival is expected to provide additional creativity, experience and versatility in midfield as Real Madrid aim to return to the summit of Spanish and European football.
