The US Open has suffered a major setback after world No. 1 Jannik Sinner announced his withdrawal from the tournament due to a right knee injury.
The Italian star had resumed hard-court training in Monte-Carlo but was unable to recover in time for the Grand Slam, where he had been hoping to return to New York as defending champion after winning the title in 2024.
Sinner expressed his disappointment over the decision, saying despite extensive efforts by his team and medical staff, he had no choice but to withdraw.
“I am obviously very sad and disappointed,” Sinner said in a statement posted on his X account.
He added that New York holds a special place in his heart and that he had been looking forward to competing again in front of the tournament’s passionate crowd.
The 24-year-old will now focus on his recovery and avoid rushing his return to competitive tennis.
His withdrawal comes shortly after he retired from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 due to the same right knee problem.
