The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned that from next week, both traders operating illegally on roads, medians, walkways, setbacks and other unauthorised public spaces and customers who patronise them will be arrested and prosecuted.
LAWMA said the enforcement is in line with Section 151(2) of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.
The agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the move was part of a renewed enforcement strategy to tackle illegal trading, indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of public infrastructure across Lagos State.
According to him, enforcement will no longer target only traders operating in prohibited areas, as buyers who purchase goods from them will also be held accountable under the law.
“The law does not only prohibit illegal street trading. It also makes it an offence to buy goods exposed or offered for sale in prohibited places,” Gbadegesin said.
“From next week, anyone found buying from traders operating on roadsides, medians, walkways, setbacks or other unauthorised spaces will be arrested, alongside the traders, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
He added that anyone convicted could face a fine of N90,000, six months’ imprisonment or both.
Gbadegesin explained that illegal markets on roadsides and medians often generate waste that ends up in drains, roads and other public spaces, contributing to blocked drainage channels, traffic congestion and public health risks.
He said the aim was to break the cycle of illegal trading and indiscriminate waste disposal, stressing that buyers who patronise illegal traders help sustain the problem.
The LAWMA boss also disclosed that the authority was strengthening waste collection services in inner streets and communities around areas previously cleared of illegal dumping.
He said identified service gaps would be addressed, while deliberate and repeated dumping, as well as continued patronage of illegal markets, would attract enforcement.
Gbadegesin urged residents and businesses to patronise recognised markets and use approved waste collection channels, stressing that personal convenience should not be prioritised over public health, environmental sanitation, road safety and the orderly use of public spaces.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to sustained enforcement, stakeholder engagement and improved waste collection services as part of efforts to eliminate open dumping and improve sanitation across Lagos State.
