The Kano State Police Command has invited Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, a Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the state House of Assembly, for questioning over the alleged unlawful display of a firearm at a political gathering.
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, October 5, 2026.
According to the police, Warkal was seen in a viral video circulating on social media allegedly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle during what appeared to be a political gathering.
The command said its personnel came across the video during routine cyber patrol as part of its intelligence-led surveillance and community engagement activities across the state.
The police stated that if established, the alleged unlawful display of the firearm would constitute a violation of the Firearms Act and could potentially cause public fear, intimidation and a breach of public peace.
Following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Warkal was invited to the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano, where he is currently assisting investigators at the State Intelligence Department (SID).
The police said an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
The Commissioner of Police warned that the command would not tolerate acts of lawlessness, thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public safety, regardless of the status of those involved.
He also urged politicians, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, the Firearms Act and other applicable laws.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace in Kano State before, during and after the political season.
