A police inspector fatally shoots a sergeant following the apprehension of a cultist in Edo.

Edo police inspector Jonathan Okouromi is said to be on the lam after allegedly killing his fellow officer, Sergeant Abosele Akhere. The incident unfolded around 9 pm on Sunday, December 24, in Ikponwosa/Egban community, Egor Local Government Area of Edo state. The episode transpired as members of the Edo State Police Anti-Kidnapping Squad and the Control Intelligence Rapid Response Squad conducted an operation to apprehend suspected cultists who had been causing unrest in the Ikponwosa/Egban community.

During the operation, Sergeant Abosele Akhere successfully apprehended a notorious cultist known as ‘Raggae,’ a prime suspect in cult-related activities. Unexpectedly, Inspector Jonathan Okouromi reportedly raised his firearm, pulled the trigger, and shot Akhere from behind during the operation. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The injured officer was quickly transported to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.

Inspector Okouromi allegedly fled the scene with his weapon upon realizing the fatal outcome. The apprehended suspected cultist, Reggae, also managed to escape, while another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was taken into custody.

The Ugbowo division of the police force is actively searching for the fugitive Inspector Okouromi. Meanwhile, the deceased police sergeant’s body has been deposited at the mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.
