The Amotekun security outfit in Ondo State has deported at least 114 individuals, mostly from Nigeria’s northern region, on suspicion of illegal entry into the state’s forests.

According to Adetunji Adeleye, the State Commander of Amotekun, the individuals were found in two trucks and were heading towards several forested areas, including Ore and Ofosu.

Adeleye explained that security forces had ramped up operations in recent weeks to prevent unauthorized individuals from infiltrating Ondo State’s forests. He revealed that the state governor had instructed security personnel to remove anyone unable to provide a legitimate reason for being in the deep forest areas.

He further disclosed that several weapons, including locally made firearms, were seized from the group, who were believed to be using the forests as a base for launching attacks before retreating. Adeleye noted that a thorough profiling process was carried out, and except for three individuals, none could provide a valid explanation for their presence or destination in the forests.

The Amotekun commander emphasized that while freedom of movement is a constitutional right, it must be exercised for lawful purposes. He added that the state governor had ordered the immediate return of the individuals to their respective home states.

During the press briefing, Adeleye also displayed some of the confiscated weapons. Meanwhile, Bala Umaru, the leader of the Hausa community in Ondo State, commended the government for prioritizing security and ensuring the safe return of the individuals to their states of origin.

The deported individuals have since been transported back to various locations across Nigeria.
