A man was taken into custody on Monday, April 14, following a tense standoff outside UnitedHealthcare’s corporate headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota—an incident now under federal investigation.

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was detained without incident after reportedly claiming to be armed and demanding $1 million during a phone call with police. Authorities say he remained inside his vehicle outside the building, where he said he had a pistol and requested to speak with a negotiator. A firearm was later recovered from his car.

The FBI and local law enforcement responded swiftly to the scene, surrounding the area and persuading the suspect to surrender peacefully. The Minnetonka Police Department later confirmed there was “no threat to the public.”

This incident comes just months after the December 4 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, an event that has prompted heightened security measures at the company’s headquarters. Local media reports indicate a sustained law enforcement presence at the site since Thompson’s death.

Thompson was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan hours before he was scheduled to speak at a major conference. The accused shooter, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and terrorism. He also faces federal charges, with U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announcing that prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty.

Bondi has described the killing as “an act of political violence,” alleging that Mangione stalked and executed Thompson in public, putting bystanders at risk. Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has denounced the government’s pursuit of capital punishment, calling it “barbaric.”

As of now, authorities have not disclosed whether Monday’s incident is linked to Mangione or the ongoing investigation into Thompson’s death. The case remains under active investigation.
