Juju and Highlife singer Iyun “Saint Janet” Ayilore has passed away.
The singer, known for blending sexually explicit lyrics with Juju and Highlife music, died on Saturday, August 1. Her manager, Jide Bass, confirmed the news to journalists.
Popularly referred to as the General Overseer of the Sinners’ Chapel and St Bottle’s Cathedral, Saint Janet built a unique reputation in the Nigerian music scene for combining street slang, provocative storytelling and traditional Juju rhythms. She was also known for her controversial adaptations of Christian gospel songs.
Saint Janet obtained a diploma in Mass Communication from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta. She began singing in her local church choir at the age of four before joining the Los Kenge Highlife/Juju Band as a backup vocalist at 18 in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
She is survived by her husband, Kayode Iyun, and their son, Orinayo Michael.
